This activity seeks to encourage personal safety and prevent personal injury by encouraging students to describe types of verbal and physical abuse (e.g., name calling, kicking and hitting).

Step #1: Read the picture book to the children.

Step #2: Ask the children to identify what the characters are feeling as well as the issues being addressed.

Step #3: Discuss the consequences of verbal abuse with the children.

Step #4: Ask the children to identify times when they have been called names. Ask them how this made them feel.

Step #5: Have the children discuss what they should do if they are being called names.
