I Know Here wins 2010 Boston Globe–Horn Book Awards for Excellence in Children’s Literature

The winners of the 2010 Boston Globe-Horn Book Awards (BGHB) were annoucned on June 8, 2010. Presented annually since 1967, the BGHB reward excellence in children’s and young adult literature and are given in three categories: Fiction and Poetry, Nonfiction, and Picture Book. I Know Here written by Laurel Croza, illustrated by Matt James and published by Groundwood Books won the picture book category.

In I Know Here, Canadian author Laurel Croza and illustrator Matt James sensitively explore and gloriously picture the feelings of a little girl contemplating her family’s move in the early 1960s from the wilds of northern Saskatchewan to the big city of Toronto.

About the Boston Globe–Horn Book Awards

All children’s and young adult books published in the United States between June 2009 and May 2010 were eligible for the award. The winning authors and illustrators may be citizens of any country. Winners in each category receive a cash prize and an engraved silver bowl. Honour book recipients receive an engraved silver plate. The acceptance speeches of the award winners will be published in the January/February 2011 issue of The Horn Book Magazine.

The 2010 Boston Globe–Horn Book Awards ceremony will be held on Friday, October 1, 2010, at Simmons College in Boston, Massachusetts. The honoured authors and illustrators are expected to be on hand to accept their awards and deliver their acceptance speeches.

Introducing the Horn Book at Simmons Colloquium
This year, the Boston Globe–Horn Book Awards will be followed by a one-day symposium at Simmons College on October 2 to examine and discuss the winners and honour books in the context of library and educational work with children and teens. Led by Simmons faculty and the editors of the Horn Book, the symposium will feature several of the awardees and their editors.
