Homelessness

The following activity uses Lily and the Paper Man to introduce kindergarten students to the issue of homelessness. This picture book was written by Rebecca Upjohn, illustrated by Renné Benoit and published by Second Story Press.

Step #1: Ask the students if they know what it means to be homeless.

Step #2: Read the picture book to the students.

Step #3: Ask the students to identify the characters in the story.

Step #4: Ask the students to identify what the characters are feeling.

Step #5: Ask the students if they remember a time when the felt the same way.

Step #6: Ask the students to identify the problem in the story. How was it solved?

Step #7: Ask the students what we can do as a community to help the homeless.
