Workshops

A discussion with immigrant children who might have had similar experiences. encouragement (at request of teachers) to children to write down stories of certain experiences their parents or caregivers might have had and how important it is to record these events, small though some might be. Where ideas come from, Where characters come from, and what characters look like. Provide posters with photographs dealing with parts of the books. Provide original items which were written about in book. Provide all children with bookmarks. Provide children with some ideas on how to write their own story.

Biography

Zelda Freedman is a retired medical librarian with a Diploma in Library Science from Algonquin College, Ottawa. As department head, she was responsible for establishing the medical library at Elisabeth Bruyere Health Centre, Ottawa, a 300 bed long term, chronic and palliative care facility.

She is a graduate of the Institute of Children’s Literature (Redding, Connecticut) and a member of the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators. A professional writer for the last eleven years, she is the author of the book Pleased To See You..You Have a Right To Ask: A Guide to Visiting Your Doctor.

In fulfilment of a promise to her mother, she wrote Rosie’s Dream Cape, her first novel for children. Since her retirement in 1991, she has become a professional painter, a potter and a weaver, with a number of juried exhibitions. Zelda Freedman is the mother of four and the grandmother of one. She lives in Ottawa, Ontario.
