Readings

My published work is for the very young, up to and including Grade 2. My readings are more interactive than strictly reading from the text. A visit to a class or day care includes the sharing of rhymes and songs. If group size and room space allow, I include circle games. Filling the room with rhythm and song but mostly laughter is my goal.

Special Equipment:

A microphone and sound system should be available

Book Sales:

Copies of books can be brought to be sold and autographed.

Biography

Theo Heras is the wearer of many hats, all of them fitting neatly one into the other. Theo has worked many years as a children’s librarian for the Toronto Public Library. As a children’s librarian she has read hundreds of children’s books and has helped lots of children find books that they will love to read. At the library, Theo works with children of all ages, but she especially enjoys facilitating programs for babies and their parents.

Theo is also a writer. Much of her writing is for professional journals and newsletters, but she is also a published children’s author. She gets her ideas from family daily life. Lastly, Theo is a singer. She has performed at the Franklin’s Children’s Garden on Centre Island in Toronto and at other venues.

As a librarian, writer and singer, Theo incorporates traditional songs and rhymes into her creative work. Her first CD and book, What Will We Do with the Baby-o?, tells the story of a baby just beginning to walk and the chaos it creates in the house. Rather than writing a narrative, Theo, helped by Jennifer’s illustrations, conveys the story through songs and rhymes, creating the "soundtrack" of the baby’s day.

Theo is the mother of three grown children and the grandmother of three school-age children. She loves to sing (naturally) and travel. She is learning to tap dance. And Theo is busy at work on new stories and another CD.

OTHER PRESENTATIONS:
As a children’s literature specialist, I am able to offer presentations to teachers, parents and early childhood educators on children’s books, children and reading and other related subjects. I can create bibliographies on special topics and present the books to professional or parent groups.
