Art Activity

Following the reading, Suzanne engages the children in a fun art activity. Suzanne discusses two main elements of the book, (1) hopes, dreams, and wishes, and (2) keepsakes and hidden treasures. The children are then encouraged to illustrate themselves in a picture within their own hopes, dreams, and wishes. For example, if a child wishes to be a ballerina, then they are to draw themselves as a ballerina.
When the children are finished drawing, their illustration is dated, named, and the age of the child is placed on the drawing. The drawing is then sealed in a special envelope as it now becomes a “keepsake”. The children are then encouraged to keep this keepsake for many years. Hopefully, when the children get older, it will also be a hidden treasure just like the Black Jacket was in the book. As adults, they will have this illustration to happily reflect upon.

An Inspirational Story….. If It Can Happen To Me, It Can Happen To You

Although Suzanne is a published author, she has a very inspiring personal story of her own struggles to become a writer. Suzanne was determined from a very young age to be an author. She has written in a journal since the age of 14. Along with her tremendous desire to write also comes her terrible spelling disability.

Nevertheless, she has been able to become a Computer Science Teacher and complete a Master of Arts degree in Educational Technology. Nothing has deterred her from obtaining her goal of being a published Author and Teacher.

Today Suzanne is busy promoting her book, The Black Velvet Jacket, and doing book readings and signings. She is also an inspirational speaker for those who want to write or simply need the encouragement to obtain their life’s dreams and passions. Her motto is, “If it can happen to me, it can happen to you! Believe that your dreams will come true.”

Biography

I grew up in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. I have always loved to write. I started writing in a diary at the age of 14. I am still writing in what I now call journals. To date, I have over 75 journals all documenting my life and family.
In 1985, I graduated from McGill University, Montreal, with a Bachelor of Education degree. I became a Teacher. This was an amazing accomplishment considering the fact that I have great difficulty spelling! I graduated in 1995 from Concordia University, Montreal, with a Master of Arts degree in Educational Technology. I became a Computer Science Teacher. I taught pre-kindergarten children all the way to high school seniors. Although I loved teaching, I was still brewing a passion for writing and the dream of becoming an Author never diminished.

Once my children were in school full time, I stopped teaching and devoted my time to writing and getting published. I have had my poetry published, which has been exciting. My first published book, The Black Velvet Jacket is based on a true family event. The success of this book has inspired me to develop a series around the main character Philip and his hopes. The series is certain to be inspiring to all young and old.

I was recently interviewed on CTV Television with Mutsumi Takahashi. This live interview can be seen at:
