Readings
I encourage the children to understand that their lives are full of stories, that everything they do, everything that happens to them can be a wonderful tale to tell. I give examples from my own writing, explaining how my stories came to be, from idea to finished product, and read a selection of my books. I always explain (suitable to the age of the children) how the art works with my words. I ask and answer many questions, and the whole event is always lively and lots of fun. I treat the children with a great deal of respect – they are authors and illustrators and storytellers too – and have always received very positive and grateful feedback from teachers.

Workshops
The content depends upon the age of the student. (I have done writing workshops with kids in Grade 1 to adults.) I touch on the most important aspects of writing: strong, interesting characters, an exciting plot (plot is a verb!), good dialogue, a worthwhile goal, a satisfactory ending. I encourage everyone to find ideas in their own lives, to see themselves as heroes on a journey, struggling to learn and grow. A small group, wishing hands-on work, will be given exercises to work on and share in class.

Biography
I have written many picture books (including over 40 titles in the Franklin series), several chapter books, books for the reluctant male reader, a board book for babies, and scripts for the television show “Role Play”.
I have a Master’s Degree in English and worked for many years as an educational editor. I teach Writing for Children at Ryerson University, and I was recently the Writer in Residence for King City Public Libraries. I have been travelling across Canada giving author visits for over 15 years.
OTHER PRESENTATIONS:
I have given speeches at a number of different venues and will gladly tailor a speech to any given need. For example, I have spoken about the creative process, about bringing children and books together, about encouraging our children to become writers.
