Readings

WHAT DO POPCORN, POTATO CHIP BAGS, IVORY SOAP AND METAMUCIL™ HAVE IN COMMON? LOTS! But you’re going to need SCIENCELADY Shar Levine, to explain how all these things fit together. Imagine the wonder and awe that your students will experience when they discover that a giant piece of white, solid foam is actually a kind of soap. Or the gross factor when they feel the slimy blob created by using natural food fibre, water and a microwave. You don’t need a special degree to help your elementary students study science. And you won’t need any expensive equipment to do these activities. Bring your imagination and discover how you can bring science to every subject you teach. Children will have fun while they learn and you will, too. Shar Levine is an internationally award-winning, hands-on children’s science writer from Vancouver, BC.

PRESENTATION OPTIONS:
COOL SCIENCE — Where does popcorn come from? How can you tell when a bubble is going to pop? Can you see through metal? Kids will learn by performing simple and safe activities. Ideal for Grades 3 – 5.

Special Equipment:

Projector that will plug into Shar’s computer for a PowerPoint presentation.

Biography

Vancouver author, Shar Levine, is an internationally award-wining, bestselling author of children's science books and science toys/kits. She has written over 50 books and with her co-author and best friend, Leslie Johnstone, has won the prestigious 2006 Eve Savory Award for Science Communication from the BC Innovation Council. Their book, Backyard Science, was chosen as one of the best books of the year by Science Books and Films and was a finalist for the Subaru Prize (hands on science/activity books) from the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

The BC Innovation Council, in awarding Shar Levine and Leslie Johnstone the 2006 Eve Savory Award for Science Communication, praised them as “outstanding writers for children and young people who have made it their professional mission to present science clearly, cleverly and dynamically to children. They have successfully translated this mission into the publication of award-winning science books of which more than one million have sold worldwide. Nine of their books have been translated into other languages including Russian, Spanish, Portuguese, Flemish and Korean”.

Shar Levine is a well known keynote speaker at early childhood educational conferences and a frequent guest speaker and presenter in kindergartens, elementary schools and libraries. She also established Vancouver’s first award-winning dedicated science store, Einstein’s the Science Centre, where she taught hands-on science in a classroom at the back of the store prior to writing her own books.
