Readings

I would be reading from my book entitled Time For Bed Little Red. It is 10 pages, 179 words and is illustrated. It is about my adorable little redheaded grandson, whom I nicknamed “Little Red” shortly after he was born. It deals with all the various ways he tries to put off going to bed. This story was written for him when he was about 18 months old. It is written in rhyming verse, a sample of which follows:

Little Red, Little Red,
Soon it will be time for bed,
But Little Red wants to play instead.

I would also be bringing copies of some of the pages from the book for the children to colour.

Workshops

Time For Bed Little Red is my first published book. It was released this spring and I have already visited several schools/daycares in the area. Check my website http://sandrascand.com for a list of these and news on upcoming events.

After reading my book I start a discussion with the children where I ask them what they like to do before bedtime, what favorite thing they like to take to bed, etc. I also talk to them about story writing, ideas for stories, and about any stories they have written and done drawings for (if age appropriate). Since my book is written in rhyming verse, I talk to the children about rhyming words. All the children really seem to love this and I think it makes the book a little unique. I bring sheets from my book for the children to color. Any questions they have for me are answered.

Biography

I am a proud grandmother of four grandsons. The eldest is 18 years old now, and the youngest is 3 years old. I have been writing little children’s stories since my oldest grandson was born. Unfortunately I did not keep a lot of these and never submitted any of them for publication.

Time For Bed Little Red is my first published book. I am hoping to make Little Red a series and have already written the sequel entitled Little Red Gets Out Of Bed.

I have worked for various colleges in Ontario and have recently retired from Conestoga College in Waterloo, Ontario.

Although I was born and raised in Toronto (Leaside), I spent 17 years in Peterborough. I now live in Waterloo near my daughter and her family.
