Readings

In a lively presentation of stories and intriguing visuals, Michelle traces the journey from idea to book. She discusses: inspiration; research; how to develop a fictional plot around a historical fact; how to illustrate a book if you’re not an illustrator; rewriting; and breaking into print. Her presentations encourage brainstorming and discussion, with plenty of time for questions and answers.

Workshops

Michelle offers 2-hour workshops or a series of three weekly workshops about writing historical fiction for children and young adults. Topics include: research; imagining yourself into a time and place; storyboarding; the details that make history come alive; and harnessing the inner editor. The series delves deeper into these topics, as well as offering numerous tried and true writing exercises and much greater opportunity for discussion. Michelle can also do workshops for Grades 11 to 12.

Biography

Michelle Mulder loves exploring. In the past ten years, she’s lived briefly in rural villages in the Dominican Republic and Peru, flipped burgers for a summer in Germany, cycled 6,000 kilometres across Canada, learned to sew Caribou mittens in the Arctic, taken up belly dancing and written three children’s books.

As an author, she enjoys telling stories of kids who seize life’s opportunities. She is particularly excited about the Fall 2007 release of Maggie and the Chocolate War, which combines two of her passions: chocolate and the power of passionate kids.

Michelle holds an M.A. in Comparative Literature (UBC). Her writing has been published in newspapers and magazines around the world, and when not writing, she enjoys reading, cycling and travelling. She has lived in Vancouver, Boston, Buenos Aires, Halifax and Montreal, and now makes her home in Victoria, BC.
