Readings

In a lively presentation of stories and intriguing visuals, Michelle traces the journey from idea to book. She discusses: inspiration; research; how to develop a fictional plot around a historical fact; how to illustrate a book if you’re not an illustrator; rewriting; and breaking into print. Her presentations encourage brainstorming and discussion, with plenty of time for questions and answers.

Workshops

Michelle offers 2-hour workshops or a series of three weekly workshops about writing historical fiction for children and young adults. Topics include: research; imagining yourself into a time and place; storyboarding; the details that make history come alive; and harnessing the inner editor. The series delves deeper into these topics, as well as offering numerous tried and true writing exercises and much greater opportunity for discussion. Michelle can also do workshops for Grades 11 to 12.

Biography

When she was growing up in Port Moody, British Columbia, Michelle’s favourite
spot was the library, so it’s no surprise she studied literature at
university. After graduating, she cycled across Canada, traveled in South
America, and married the Argentine pen pal she’d been writing to since she was
fourteen.

In the past fifteen years, she’s worked as a ditch digger in the Dominican
Republic, a burger flipper in Germany, and a simulated patient for student
doctors to practice on in Halifax, with lots of other less interesting jobs in
between. She loves writing because it allows her to have big adventures
without leaving her living room and also demands research that takes her
farther from home than she’d ever dreamed.

Her books have been nominated for several awards including the Bolen Books
Prize, the Chocolate Lily Award, and the Rocky Mountain Award. For more
