Readings
As both an illustrator and an author, I am able to share with students the fascinating process of how a book is put together from start to finish. I gear my presentation to the age group I am talking to, but with all students I begin talking about concepts for stories and specifically where my ideas come from. I talk about writing the manuscript, then how an illustrator takes the words to a story and begins to envision the story visually. I show the students how to create characters, how to design pages that are dynamic to look at, as well as making a book that flows textually and visually.

Workshops
My workshops can be tailored to fit the needs of the students I’m working with. As a watercolour artist and illustrator, I can work with a group in designing a book, or work with students on creating illustrations for their own stories. I demonstrate how I go about painting an illustration, and help them in their own drawing and painting with practical techniques.

Biography
Lisa Smith has always enjoyed being creative, and at an early age was producing her own “books”. An avid reader as a child, Lisa often visualized the story in her imagination and realized as a teen that she would like to pursue a career in illustration. She attended the Ontario College of Art and Design (formerly OCA) and majored in Communications and Design graduating with the Ontario College of Art medal. Lisa’s illustrations have appeared in many national magazines as well as books for children. Lisa also enjoys painting commissioned pieces and portrait work and her artwork is held in many private collections. As well as writing and illustrating children’s books, Lisa also enjoys sharing her love of nature and art with students of all ages. Lisa lives in Port Credit, Ontario with her family and dog, Lucy.
OTHER PRESENTATIONS:
I am available to speak with teachers and librarians. The content of my sessions is very much the same as my readings or workshops. I also teach art to students of all ages, so am able to share drawing and painting techniques and how to help a child make their vision of an illustrated story become a reality.
