Readings
In my school visits, I try to give my audience a sense of myself as a person who loves to read and write and to enjoy the natural world. I show my books and describe the variety of genres represented. I read a poem or two and one or two of my books and talk about they came into being. Every talk I give is a different combination of the many topics I like to discuss. I carry examples of the stages in the creation of the artwork of my books, as well as early-stage manuscripts and galleys. I also carry a few props that are fun to examine and explain. Answering the kids’ questions is one of my favourite parts of a presentation.

Biography
I came to Canada from Texas more than three decades ago and have lived in Guelph, Ontario since then, raising a son and a daughter, now grown. I am a nature enthusiast with a big back yard full of wildlife critters who don’t seem to mind that I have two big hairy dogs. The garden is weedy but still grows some really good food. My writing started out with poetry, moved into picture books, continued to non-fiction and biography, stopped off at early readers and danced into musical lyrics. Recently I have been writing more poetry and have several non-fiction topic that need exploring. I hope to keep moving through this enjoyable loop of creativity for a long time, producing many more works for young people.
OTHER PRESENTATIONS:
I have given several keynote addresses at teachers’ and librarians’ conference, as well as professional development day programs. The content revolves around my writing inspirations and how my work can be used to encourage students to express themselves.
