Readings

I do readings from both my books. I talk about the creative process, the writing process, and the process that led to me getting published. I also do a Q&A in order to include the students as much as possible and talk about what they want to talk about in regards to writing and the writing life.

Workshops

Fiction writing, Imagery, and the Five Senses
By using the works of Renoir, Van Gogh, Leonard Cohen, Tom Waits and Tommy Makem, this workshop shows the students how to use their five senses to bring the reader into their imagination or memory. The workshop explains what imagery is and then uses art, music, meditation and spoken word pieces to demonstrate how the students can enrich their writing by focusing on small details and by using their five senses. After the examples are shown and presented, the students are then asked to enter Renoir’s Dance at Le Moulin de la Galette (Le Bal au Moulin de la Galette) or, Van Gogh’s Café at Night, by painting themselves into the pictures with words and creating a story of their own inside that world.

Biography

Colin Frizzell grew up on a farm in Cressy, Ontario. He has lived in Toronto Canada, Ireland and the UK. He now divides his time between Toronto and Prince Edward Country, Ontario (while dreaming of Ireland).

Colin was a proud part of, ‘Now Hear This’’, SWAT (Students, Writers and Teachers) program. He was privileged to be able to work, as a writer-in-residence, with students at Father John Redmond Secondary School in Etobicoke, Ontario.

As well as being a writer, Colin holds a diploma in Radio Broadcasting from Loyalist College of Arts and Technology. He has worked behind the scenes (doing whatever was asked of him) on films in Canada, Ireland and the UK.

Colin has also studied acting at Toronto’s ‘New School of Drama’ and improvisation at the world-renowned ‘Second City’. He has appeared in three never- to- be- released short films (starring in one) and was the voice of the village priest in one never- to- be- released feature film. He’s much better live.

Colin is the author of Chill, a teen novel, and Just J, a coming of age story for all ages (published by Orca Book Publishers). He is a member of both the Irish Writers Union and the Writers’ Union of Canada.
