Readings

For the younger students, Ange will focus more on his poster design for the 2005 Summer Reading Club. He will also explain the process of children's book illustration by showing research materials and sketches, and by demonstrating drawing. For the older students, Ange will tell the story of his book, Red Land Yellow River. For both audiences, Ange will also include a question and answer session.

Biography

Ange Zhang is an author, illustrator, and a theatre designer who designed for the National Opera Theatre in Beijing before coming to Canada. He worked for a time at the Banff Centre for the Arts and then obtained a position as assistant set designer at the Stratford Festival. He has designed more than 40 theatre productions in Canada, China, Japan, and Finland. Ange has illustrated many children’s books, including Thor by W.D. Valgardson, which won a Mr. Christie’s Book Award in 1995, and The Kid Line, The Stoneboat and The Fishing Summer written by Teddy Jam. He has written and illustrated his own book, Red Land Yellow River: A Story from the Cultural Revolution which was nominated for a 2004 Governor-General’s Award for Children’s Literature. And has been awarded 2005 the Bologna Ragazzi Award for Non-Fiction. His book has been published in French, German, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, and Greek.
