Presented up until 2002 by the Canadian Authors Association to the Canadian writer (citizen or landed immigrant) of the best children's short story published in Canada in the previous year. The selection was made by an independent panel of judges, and the award carried a prize of $3,000. If the short story appeared in a Canadian periodical or anthology, the editor also received a cash prize of $1,000. Presentations were made at the annual awards dinner of the Canadian Author's Association.
