The Martyn Godfrey Young Writers’ Award was created to honour the memory of Canadian children’s author Martyn Godfrey who passed away in 2000 at the age of 51. The award will be an annual, juried writing competition open to all Canadian students in grades 7 through 9. Students will be asked to submit a humorous short story or first chapter of a humorous novel (between 500 and 1500 words) and a short application form. First Prize is $500; Second Prize is $200; and Third Prize is $100. This money is to be used to help fund the winners’ participation in YouthWrite, the Writers’ Guild of Alberta’s summer writing camp for young people. The winning entries will be announced on April 17th, annually.
