This award was established in 1936 by the Canadian Author's Association in permanent recognition of literary merit. A bronze medal was presented for the best books of poetry, fiction, non-fiction and juvenile literature. Later the Canada Council financed the awards, offering a cash prize of $1,000 and a deluxe binding of the award books.
