The award is administered by a committee of three members of the Canadian section of the International Board on Books for Young People (IBBY). The recipient of the award must be a Canadian illustrator of a picture book published in Canada, in English or in French during the previous calendar year. The book must be a first edition and contain original illustrations. All genres are considered: fiction, non-fiction, poetry, folk and fairy tales. The award is presented annually by IBBY Canada unless no book is judged to be deserving of the award. The winner is given a scroll and a cash prize of $1,000.
